| Fraudsters using HMRC's name |
An increasing number of fraudsters are using HM Revenue & Customs' (HMRC) name to try to part businesses from their money. The HMRC website lists a number of different frauds it is currently aware of, including one involving a fake anti-terrorism certificate and another offering compensation to victims of fraud. All the cons attempt to persuade the victim to hand over financial details, and either involve an e-mail supposedly from HMRC, or a phonecall. The frauds, which are always from overseas, usually feature e-mails in poorly written English.
